Parish Council or Local Board of Administration

The Parish Council, or Local Board of Administration (BOA) is the lay governing body of the congregation as detailed in the Free Methodist Book of Discipline to, “work in partnership with the senior pastor (rector) to implement the vision for the church and to promote and support the church’s mission”, with the variety of terms being elected annually at the Society meeting. BOA meetings are open for anyone to attend.

What is a Rector?

The Rector serves as the spiritual leader and chief pastor of the parish, guiding the congregation in worship, teaching, and pastoral care. Historically, the term “rector” comes from the Latin rector, meaning “one who guides” or “rules,” and was used in the Church of England to describe the priest responsible for both the spiritual oversight and temporal welfare of a parish. Today, the Rector continues that calling—shepherding the people of God, overseeing the ministry staff, and leading the parish in its mission to proclaim the Gospel and serve the community.

What is a Sexton?

Church tradition has understood the role of the sexton to be the caretaker and guardian of church space. The Sexton cares for the church’s buildings and grounds, ensuring all spaces are clean, safe, and welcoming for worship and community activities. This ministry of stewardship supports the life of the congregation by maintaining the sanctuary, classrooms, offices, and property with diligence and reverence.
